Sablefilm develops your photos. Sablefilm Layers edits layered files. Most people want one; photographers who also build composites want both.

Questions

Before you buy.

Is it a subscription?

No. Sablefilm Layers is £9.99, paid once. There is nothing to renew, no account to create and no internet connection needed.

How do I get my licence key?

Your licence key is emailed straight after purchase, together with your download link. Open the app, paste the key and click Activate. It is checked on your Mac, so it works offline, and one key covers up to three of your Macs. Lost it? Email sablefilmapp@gmail.com with your order number and we will resend it.

Is there a free trial?

No. The app is locked until you enter your licence key. If it is not for you, ask within 14 days for a refund.

Can I use my own PSD files?

Yes, that is the whole point. Layers opens your original PSD and PSB files, shows the layers, groups, masks and effects the way Photoshop does, and lets you carry on editing. You do not have to rebuild anything.

Will Photoshop still open the file I save?

Yes. Layers saves real PSD files that Photoshop opens as normal. Anything Layers does not understand is left as it was in the file.

Is it a Photoshop replacement?

No, and we would rather say so up front. Layers is the Photoshop-file job: opening, editing and saving layered files. There are no selections, transforms, text editing, filters or pixel painting yet. If you need those, keep Photoshop for them.

What can I do with the layers?

Group, hide and show them, change opacity and any of the 27 Photoshop blend modes, add pixel and vector masks, and stack adjustment layers such as curves, levels, hue and saturation, colour balance, black and white and vibrance. Drop and inner shadows, glows, colour and gradient overlays and strokes are shown the way Photoshop draws them. Text layers and smart objects are kept exactly as they are and shown as Photoshop drew them; you can move, mask and re-blend them. Bevel, emboss and satin effects are kept in the file but not drawn yet.

What is the difference between Sablefilm and Sablefilm Layers?

Sablefilm develops your photos: RAW editing, your own Lightroom presets, film looks and noise reduction. Sablefilm Layers edits layered PSD files. Most people want one; photographers who also build composites want both. The comparison above shows the difference.

What can I export?

Save back to PSD, or export a flattened JPEG, PNG or TIFF. Exporting never changes your PSD.

What do I need to run it?

A Mac running macOS 14 (Sonoma) or newer, Apple silicon or Intel.

Why does my Mac say it cannot verify the developer?

Sablefilm Layers is not from the Mac App Store, so macOS asks you to approve it once. Click Done (not Move to Bin), open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, scroll to Security and click Open Anyway. The steps are on our Support page.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If it is not for you, email sablefilmapp@gmail.com within 14 days of buying and we will refund you. The details are in our refund policy.
